I am closing down my Facebook account today. Besides from feeling that my private life is violated, I don’t really think my life gets any better by having yet another website, account or profile to take care of. Besides that, the daily deleting of chain letters and denying of hotness requests, is also taking way too much of my time and lord knows I can live without knowing everything about everyone all the time. Have enough trouble keeping track of my own whereabouts.
I wanted to use facebook for my real life network but it got out of hand for me. I can’t figure out who are mere acquaintances and who are real friends anymore.
It’s a shame ’cause I really like the architecture of Facebook. The fact that everyone can write an application that users can add to their profile is great, and adds just as much functionality to the network as myspace has, though myspace is a lot more tweakable design-wise.
Maybe I just have to face that, I can’t have my cake and eat it too. If you want your privacy, don’t use Facebook…
What do you think of Facebook?

I agree. I HATE the zombie-shit and likeness-stuff you get all the time. The worst thing is when old “friends” adds you and you notice that they’ve turned out to be assholes. It’s good to “edit friends” sometimes.
One of the great things is the event-thing. I think Myspace should take after that instead of letting people know that I’ve changed my profilepic.

I never wanted a Facebook profile because i got all of my friends on messenger and I’ve already got a MySpace profile… I think it is getting a little out of hand with these sites sometimes because the line between friends and strangers are getting a little to close for my taste…

I’ve never had a Facebook account. It’s never interested me. I know who my friends are and if I want to stay in touch with them and be in their lives, then I do by means of an old thing called the telephone. I even meet them in person ( I know, I’m mad!!!). There’s a lot of peer pressure to have an account, I’m pretty sure all of my friends have them and they never stop banging on about this thing and that thing on Facebook, but it’s not for me. I have no wish for my private life to be public or to read someone else’s diary, which is essentially what the experience appears to be. There is a big question about Social Networking Sites regarding privacy, and Facebook has it’s own issues. My personal gripe is that anyone can post an image of me, and Tag it with my name for everyone to see, without my knowledge or consent, but that is a WWW issue as well I suppose. I have a MySpace Account, but for me, MySpace has always been about hearing new music, and if I make some new chums along the way then great, but it’s not really purpose of it for me. Nice to have you back Troels. Garry

So far the flow of spam at Facebook has eluded me, but I definitely don’t like that Big Brother surveillance concept. And I can easily relate to your remark about keeping track of your own whereabouts! I too prefer Myspace; though I’m not sure whether or not I should be flattered about all those messages I receive these day with a “hi sweetie†in the subject line……

I konw the feeling, that is comming from your stumick( I know i spelled that wrong) It makes you feel naked, and makes a small voice ekkoing in your ear,” I toud U so”
Well from the start, I am verry skeptic about invoulving me in any internet invoierment, and specially when evryboddy starts to ride the wave of ” the new cool , must do hype shit”
Well I burn my fingers to and learn. just like you.
i newer had a facebook profile, I was skeptic from day uno.
You can easyly network on the www, without having to be evrywhere.

I recently created a Facebook account. It was fun at first, but now all those requests (kind of drinker, werewolves, vampires etc.) just annoys me. Also, people seem to think it’s an open market place for chain letters.. The further you get into it, less personal it gets imo..
As for Last.fm, I still have an account. I think it still has some consistency to it, but who knows if it’ll last..
Neat design, Troels btw..

Facebook can be modified for your needs, and is in fact not that bad… I have set my privacy level to maximum so only friends may view my profil. I also turned of the email alerts so I won’t be spammed. Lastly I have refrained from adding any apps which basicly makes facebook a networking and info tool for me. I agree with the people making points that telephone and real life interactions should be valued more than facebook, but I also think it’s nice to be able to keep in touch with peolpe you wouldn’t normally send an sms to or give a call…
