Christmas card

Tonight is the last show from my part this year. No more concerts – just plain relaxing until january 1st. I am putting the final touches on my new album(s) in the beginning of next year, and I am really looking forward to releasing the damn thing.

I think 2008 has been a good year. A lot of nice things have happened with the band and on a personal level there has been some major events for me too. I am confident that next year will blow my mind even more

I want to wish everyone who supports me in one way or the other, a merry christmas and a happy new year. Take care and see you next year.

For some reason this reminds of christmas:

Marnie Stern

I’ve been meaning to do a piece about this magnificent woman for a long time, but every time I try to write something about her and her music, I get lost for word. The truth is that I don’t know many like Marnie Stern. There I go again…lost for words. Her music is all bout being experienced. I can tell you this. She is a mean shredder. And her new record has a ridiculously long name.

Marnie Stern – Transformer

The album – with a title I shall truncate here to be called only “This is it…” – is pretty psychotic and is a true trash rock when it’s best. Very loud, very fast and very clever. Important stuff this is.

Buy her new album on iTunes or Amazon

Oh yeah by the way: Happy holidays everyone, and a happy new year to you too!

Songs using “that beat” from garageband

You know, there are good things about garageband and there are bad things. The good must be, that everyone has easy access to be a recording artist and express themselves with music. The bad must be that the soundscapes suddenly gets very limited. There a only so many beats and loops in Apples famous production software and there is just enough content, so people don’t feel inclined to expand their sample library. But maybe that’s the point.

Take for instance this beat:

Now this beat is called “Electronic Drum Beat 02″ and has a sister with the surname “03″ that features an additional hihat rhythm. Personally, I have heard this beat in several songs over the past two years , and I think that maybe the fact that this is the only electronic beat in garageband that approaches cool, is to blame for this. A few songs that feature “Electronic Drum Beat 02″ and possibly “03″:

Rye Rye with MIA – Tic Toc

A little harder to spot but I know it is for fact.

As In Rebekka Maria – She Lion

And a remix of mine, where I used the beat that was already on the song. And the beat was…you guessed it…

Disoriented Am I – I Recognized Us (SuperTroels Remix)

There are probably a ton more out there, and If you know of any other songs using this beat, please post it in the comments.

I am not judging anyone who uses the beat. I just find it funny that, the sound popular music has in a certain period, is so influenced by what technologies we have at our disposal. A very good example of this is the TR-808 drum-machine. This little (5 kilos actually) piece of equipment – limited in it’s sound as it might be – helped form techno and electro-hiphop and is still used in both hiphop, techno and house today. A machine that is over 25 years old, and very limited as opposed to modern drum-machines, is still sought after and can easily range at $8-900, if in good condition. The TR-808 and it’s younger brother the TR-909, had an enormous impact on electronic music, and therefore still has it’s relevance today.

If you don’t know what the TR-808 sounds like here’s a sample pack you can check out. It’s not the same as the real thing, but it gives you the general idea.

Maybe the “Electronic Drum Beat 02″ has it’s place in musical history. Maybe musicians in thirty or forty years time will use the beat as a historical reference much like many crunk artist are using the TR-808 today.

What do you think? Do we have any equivalents to the TR-808, the TR-909 or other relics, that will prove their worth as classic instruments in the future?

History repeating?

Jacob Holdt and Rune Engelbreth Larsen have produced this open letter to the president elect, Barack Obama, regarding their concerns about the tone of the immigration debate in Denmark. I couldn’t agree more with the content of the letter, but maybe the music is a little on the dramatic side. So turn down your speakers and please take this message seriously.

Nihilist spasms

IMG_0047.JPG

I have taken a week out of my schedule and gone to a house way up north. I’ve set out to be all alone up here, to have time and mind to write new material. The house I am in is a proper refuge far from all the distractions of everyday life. No TV for a week, my friends! (I have a radio and some veeeeeeeeery slow internet)

When I’m lying here at night trying to sleep but cant, because it’s way to silent outside and there’s no one but me in the house, I get in that certain mood. You know, the one where your thoughts are getting deeper and deeper and you end up with that crucial question in you’re head: What does it all mean? This moment of sudden existential realization, that we all encounter from time to time – we can call it nihilist spasms – is unique for man and is probably the only thing that differentiate us from animals. Besides that, it’s the fuel for all creative thinking, and therefore these thoughts – how unpleasant they might be at times – are important to think from time to time.

I like to live in the city, but at times I think it’s healthy to get away and get reacquainted with your own self again.

The Nihilist Spasm Band – Oh America!

This Song has nothing to do with the post, except for the bandname (which is the greatest bandname ever thought off), but I like the part where he goes “Fuck me America…Fuck the world!” Cheers!
